Nine – Swiss-made Cloud Mastery

Nine Internet Solutions

Nine is a cloud and application platform by Nine Internet Solutions in Switzerland. While Nine Internet Solutions offers classic colocation and managed hosting solutions, the distinctive product is the Deploio application engine.

Nine is currently brought to the world from two data centers in the Zürich region in Switzerland.

Features & Services

Nine has all the basic cloud primitives such as managed Servers, managed Databases, Object Storage, and managed Kubernetes, and two search products: managed Solr and managed OpenSearch.

A unique product is the Deploio application engine, which claims to convert Git repositories into applications. The idea and concepts of Deploio seem to be similar to CloudFoundry with STACKIT.

Another product worth pointing out is the managed Kubernetes offering. Nine has two different managed Kubernetes engines: their own Nine Kubernetes Engine and the Google Kubernetes Engine.

To provide global scale to their clients when necessary, Nine Internet Solutions are offering a managed Cloudflare solution, with all the features that Cloudflare brings: DDoS protection, a Web Application Firewall (WAF), a Content Delivery Network (CDN), image optimization, etc.

The Nine platform does not (yet) offer primitives in the AI space.

Developer Experience

The Nine platform currently comes with a minimal set of officially supported tooling. There is no official Nine Terraform provider and no SDKs. The primary ways to interact with the Nine platform are the ncl command line interface and the Nine Cockpit.

API

The Nine API is well documented: docs.nine.ch | API. It seems that it does not cover all available services. Managed Solr and Shibboleth for example seem not to be included in the API. For use cases around Deploio, the API seems to be complete and intuitive to use.

CLI

One way to use the Nine platform is the nctl command line interface. Its source code is publicly available in the Nine repository on GitHub. As the CLI is a wrapper around the Nine API, it covers the same surface.

Cockpit

The Nine cockpit is well-structured and easy to navigate. It seems to focus on Deploio. Some tasks, such as creation of a managed servers, are not available directly in the cockpit.

For some products, e.g. managed servers and a managed Cloudflare instance, the Nine support must be contacted.

Other services, such as managed Solr and managed OpenSearch seem to not be surfaced in the Cockpit as of end of 2025.

Data Centres

Nine is operated from two data centers in the Zürich region in Switzerland. One site is in colozueri and the other one in e-shelter.

Nine Internet Solutions can operate workloads that are compliant with FINMA Circular 2008/7 ‘Outsourcing – Banks’.

It remains to be seen if Nine will stick to relying on colocation centers when expanding or if they intend to operate their own data centers eventually.

Environmental Policy

Nine Internet Solutions do not have an elaborate environmental policy. Some hints about the environmental stance of Nine can be found in the guest blog post by myclimate about the environmental impact of digital solutions.

Both Nine data centres are powered by 100% green electricity, as described in the Renewable Energy section of the Nine documentation.

Certifications

Nine Internet Solutions hold the ISO 2007 and the ISO 9001 certificates, both issued by the Swiss Safety Center AG.

NameDescription
ISO 27001World's best-known standard for information security management systems (ISMS)
ISO 9001Standard for Quality Management

Details about the Nine certifications can be found together with the description of the Nine infrastructure.

Conclusion

Nine is a small Swiss-made cloud platform, primarily catering Swiss clients (it seems). For clients that are looking for Swiss infrastructure that goes well beyond pure server hosting, the Nine platform presents a compelling solution. Especially the Deploio application engine seems like a powerful feature, well-suited for straightforward scenarios where the primary requirement is to host a simple app with a database.

It is going to be interesting to observe how Nine Internet Solutions intend to grow. Is it through geographic expansion? Through extending the service portfolio, e.g. with AI products?
